“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8)
So, how does a Christian proceed from here?
My gut feeling is that we’ll have our hands full with just the basics.
Which is to Stand for God’s word.
To Defend biblical absolutes.
And to Hold on to Truth, Honesty, Justice, Purity, Loveliness, and Virtue.
To proclaim that these things are still what God loves and requires regardless of whatever perversity the culture demands we accept.
Sad for the Loss
Growing up in the 50s, was such a blessing and privilege. There was so much about life that was still regarded as wholesome and good. Even TV was basically good. Traditional family life was still regarded as the ideal.
Of course, the world has always been evil since the Fall. And, of course, there has always been that which is not right in the government and the culture. Nothing is perfect in this world.
But back then, there were still things that were considered wholesome and good. Good goals. Good practices. Good deeds. And a general agreement in the country about what was right and wrong.
Men could still say what they believed. They could argue with one another. And people had enough of a hide to take it. To disagree without silencing the other person. Without dragging the person to court because someone used a word they didn’t like.
There was still a sense of reality and common sense in the culture.
What We CAN Do Now
But we ain’t in the 50s anymore. Now, the world is very openly hostile to goodness and truth. And, they are substituting their own definition of what those things are.
And as obvious and basic as the above list of things may seem to be, they are like smoke in the eyes of the current culture. But as Christians, they are things we must stand upon and agree with in the civil discourse. In the public arena.
This is where we can Start. This is our Foundation.
By believing God’s words, teaching His words in depth in our churches, and standing fast on what those words say. Resisting those who are questioning the plain reading and plain meaning of those words. And resisting those who are trying to minimize the gospel; to break the gospel down to some few ideas that are agreeable to everyone!
If we demand truth and honesty, the wicked and evil culture will hate us. For simply doing that.
This will drive those people crazy who desperately seek to eliminate the concepts of absolute good and absolute evil. Who want to establish their world based on some other authority. Some other basis of right and wrong.
They want to establish a world where the gospel is no longer heard. Where the Lord of Hosts can no longer tell them what to do. Where they will no longer be convicted by the words of God.
And where they can deny the very idea that He is coming again.
That the Lord of Glory is coming quickly to judge the hearts of men.
