There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown. (Genesis 6:1-4)
When people think of giants in the Bible, they generally think of Goliath. As in David, Goliath and the “slingshot”.
Goliath was both big and tall. But they wouldn’t carry his size in the “big men’s” department at J.C. Penny’s. He was about 13 feet tall, if I remember correctly.
Now, granted, that’s huge. But I’m thinking about guys a whole lot bigger than that.
We’re Talking Really BIG!
When I read the passage above, I’m not thinking about Goliath, LeBron James or Captain Bates (the famous “Giant of Seville” in Ohio).
No, I’m thinking more about something like Kong.
As in King Kong of Skull Island.
Consider the following verse from the Old Testament record speaking of the height and strength of giants.
Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath. (Amos 2:9)
Here is a picture I found regarding the size and girth of the cedars of Lebanon.
And what of the verse that compares the height of men and giants from Exodus? Men are compared to grasshoppers in a giant’s sight.
And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. (Numbers 13:33)
Below is a photo of a good-sized grasshopper on a man’s finger.
So let’s do the math.
If a grasshopper is only 2 inches high and a person is 5 feet tall (60 inches). That is a 30:1 ratio. So a 5-foot man would look like a grasshopper to a 150-foot giant!
Yikes!
Although the Lord does not approve of making idols or statues to Himself, the introductory photo of the Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil perfectly demonstrates the scale we’re contemplating. (And there are some pretty cool photos online that have been taken of it in fog, mist, sunset, etc.)
It’s about 100 feet tall from the feet to the top of the head. And look at the size of the people below it in comparison.
You may say, “This couldn’t happen. that it could never happen. Never.”
Because, “Science says its an impossibility.”
Return to Wonder
I like what Ken Ham has said in response to that. “Science doesn’t say anything.”
Now, I’m not drawing Ken Ham into my “giants conclusions” here. That is of my own doing.
But he’s right. Science has nothing to say about it. Science is practical knowledge, data, ideas and formulas. A million rocks in a drawer in a thousand scientific foundations.
Science doesn’t draw conclusions. People do.
Based on their own assumptions.
What we’re talking about here is supernatural. The Bible makes absolutely no sense without the supernatural influence of God and His angels — both the good and the fallen.
If one chooses Naturalism as his religious philosophy of life, then he is in the deep weeds when it comes to explaining …. pretty much everything.
How incredibly boring to think there are no mysteries in life. That everything has some kind of rational explanation. That it all comes down to chemical and physical reactions within a universe dominated by random selection and random chance.
And whatever happened to “the open mind”?
Christians are always being told that they have a closed mind. A narrow mind. Because we do not bow the knee to popular scientific opinion. And generally don’t care for popular cultural demands.
At least some of us don’t.
Because, the word of God is filled with amazing and wonderful things beyond our human understanding.
Since I’ve grown more deeply in love with what the Bible says and more dependent on its accuracy for my moment-to-moment spiritual life, I’m willing to consider that man may have only scratched the surface of the infinite iceberg of knowledge of God and His universe.
Man thinks he’s smart. But his understanding is so limited. You could even say it is “infinitely” limited. Because, God is infinitely wiser than man.
And God has said exactly what He means in the Bible. He doesn’t use hyperbole. Nor exaggeration. Nor inaccuracy.
Nor fairy tales.
So, just how would you deal with a 150-foot giant?
How would you feed him? What would you talk about? Where could he sit down?
Anywhere he wants.

I have read this section of scripture many times. I have never done the math to see how large a person it really was.
When ant man became giant man in the movie civil war, the proportions seem in line with the Bible account. How did they have offspring of men of renown? How did a common man take them down in battle. Lots of thinking points for sure. Wonder if they will be back for the end times?
Science really does not answer the really interesting questions. Science can be really be narrow minded about issues it denies are real. Science is a thin slice of what God is.

Hey Denny,
There are lots of interesting sites online that deal with the Nephilim (the offspring) and the havoc they brought to the earth in Noah’s day. There is a passage in the New Testament that says something like “as in the days of Noah, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be”. There are many that believe there will be a resurgence of the Nephilim activity before that day. Which may already have begun behind the scenes. Very interesting stuff to study. Thanks for reading and your comments.
