The Thing That is “Least”

“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.” (Luke 16:10)

Generally, when we hear this phrase taught in our churches, the leaders will try to identify some specific “thing” which is least.

The context here seems to be all about money. And how we conduct our “business” in the world. And so, this passage has become a favorite of pastors who like to preach in January about tithing and giving. They focus on how much we value our money in relation to the Lord’s work. Such as the needs of the church, or missions, or other places where our money could be used.

Others may focus on our personal Bible study, or service, or love, or on a thousand other things. With the belief that IF we will just focus on that one thing well, we will also be counted to have been faithful in much.

It’s like a kind of strategy for success in the Christian life. Like a salesman looking for special tips on how he can close a sale. Or someone trying to get a job who practices giving the right answers to potential interview questions.

Or just a way to simplify the complexities of the Christian life. Because churches are all about that these days. About how we just need to focus on “love”.

Their reasoning is that IF we focus on love, in the ways our leaders tell us to do, then that focus will take care of everything else.

But I don’t think this passage is talking about any of those things.

“The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth: for the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.” (II John 1:1-2)

The Evangelical church is known for its emphasis on “love”. Whatever love may mean.

Emphasizing whatever popular Humanistic and Progressive concepts about love that the Christian academics are feeding the leadership of our local churches. As they call Christians to be activists and socially-engaged Christians.

All in the name of “love.

And, while that observation may sound cynical, the reality is, there is no real way to define love.

Along with that emphasis on love is a great resistance to place any boundaries or limits on what love actually allows us to do. And not do.

Instead, love has become a kind of excuse that is used whenever there is any argument that involves truth or doctrine.

Love is used as an excuse to shut down any debate or concern over whether we are teaching and believing what the Bible actually says. Whether we are truly following the specific things Jesus actually taught us to believe.
