So, the other day I heard someone refer to those who are “uneducated” as being inferior to those who are “educated”.
The context was in comparing those who live in the agricultural communities of the Midwest with those who live in the large “educated” cities and cultural centers.
This person actually shocked me by his bold frankness.
By openly stating that those who have received a “higher” education are more reasonable, tolerant, and just better people than those who’ve only earned a high school diploma. Or who’ve only received some trade-school equivalent – at best.
A Distraction
However, this idea of the educated versus the uneducated is a distraction.
It doesn’t really nail down the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Or truly define who is good and who is bad.
Nor does this thinking guarantee that those who have been educated will understand the world any better than those who haven’t.
Because each and every one of us is no better than those we choose to follow. Or than the principles of life we choose to accept.
Yet “education” has become the measuring stick used by those in the popular culture to denigrate the vast majority of the American population.
And, in like manner, this standard has been applied by Christian leaders to determine who is fit to be a leader and who is not. Or which believers are acceptable to teach and which are not.
True Independence
This “education” distraction is really about those who have been programmed by the state and ivy-league schools versus those who reject the philosophies they teach.
This is about the philosophies or “elements” of the world versus the wisdom of God. The Wisdom which can Only be found within God’s word.
This boils down to compliance versus true independence.
Yet, the “educated” believe themselves to be the independent ones, the free thinkers, the tolerant, and the open minded.
And, in the case of Christian leaders, those who believe themselves to be the most able to interact with the culture. To be the most effective ones in the New Social Engagement that saturates Evangelicalism today. Which Christian churches have allowed themselves to become so entangled with.
We Choose a Master
While, in truth, they’ve merely submitted themselves to the bondage of corruption.
Believing that by embracing a free and loving attitude toward wickedness and sin they are more effective in winning the lost. And more relevant to the world by bringing a gospel that is more acceptable to the culture.
When they’ve simply submitted themselves to a different master. A master who will use them to accomplish his own ends.
And, in the end, will leave them to suffer the consequences of their compromises and sins. Sins which they deny they are guilty of. And which they deny any accountability for.
Because the world lives in a state of denial about God’s holiness. And in denial that He has clearly defined the Way of Life and the Way of Death.
A God who has provided true education for every soul who will seek Him.
And who promises true liberty to every soul that will trust in Him.
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (John 8:31-32)
