“In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.” (Judges 21:25)
Our Postmodern, Post-Christian society thinks that they are unique, intellectual, and thoughtful. And that they are loving and tolerant of all things.
Except, of course, when it comes to having any tolerance for biblical faithfulness.
But, in reality, Postmodernism is simply an ancient idea packaged for consumption by a new generation of wicked men and women.
Didn’t Solomon say that there is nothing new under the sun?
Modern, sophisticated unbelief and wickedness is not new. Our culture is simply embracing an ancient philosophy dressed up to appear more sophisticated, more scientific, and more sexy to this contemporary generation.
Nevertheless, it’s still rather startling to observe the increased attempt of our culture to create a life that is devoid of biblical truth or even any biblical reference.
You can see this “absence” of Christian reference in the movies being made. Or the books being written. Or the TV and cable series that are continually churned out.
The stories that are created depict people following after every conceivable spiritual path except the Way of Life. They have been very careful to construct a world that has nothing to do with Christ. Or which gives very vague lip service to “a Christ” that has nothing to do with the Bible.
It’s also curious that this generation does not shun “spirituality”. People speak of things spiritual all the time. But that spirituality may be nothing more than an atheist’s practice of meditation.
Upon “whom” he’s meditating is anybody’s guess. Or just “what” he’s experiencing in his meditation is also a mystery. And just what “entity” he’s encountering in “the stillness” we may not really want to know.
So, with all this removal of biblical truth and of the Lord Himself from our culture, it shouldn’t come as any great surprise to Christians that their voices are not welcome. And that they will be increasingly silenced. And that their rights will be increasingly violated.
Especially when Christians dare to make a stand for biblical morality or proclaim biblical truth.
The sad fact is that Christians will face increasing hatred and even violence from the culture that claims to tolerate all ideas and expressions.
Because the “gods” whom our contemporary culture has chosen to serve hate the Lord and his word. And will, consequently, hate us.
So, we’d better buckle up; because we’re heading into serious turbulence ahead.
